Frequently Asked Questions
How does having a baby change a marriage?
A baby changes almost everything. Your schedules change. Your priorities change. Your sleep disappears. Your attention becomes divided. Even your understanding of love changes.
In Episode 19, Doc and Crystal reflect on how becoming parents deepened their appreciation for one another. The arrival of their daughter brought challenges, exhaustion, and uncertainty, but it also created a new level of closeness as they learned to navigate parenthood together.
Why do so many couples struggle after having a baby?
Many couples underestimate how much physical, emotional, and lifestyle adjustment is required after a baby arrives.
New parents are often dealing with:
Sleep deprivation
Recovery from childbirth
New responsibilities
Changes in intimacy
Increased stress
Less personal time
None of those things mean something is wrong with the marriage. They mean your relationship is adapting to a major life change.
How can husbands support their wives after childbirth?
Support often starts with attentive presence. In Episode 19, Crystal talks about how protected, loved, and secure she felt during an emergency C-section and throughout her recovery. Simple acts of reassurance, physical support, patience, affection, and attentiveness can make an enormous difference during postpartum healing.
Sometimes the most powerful thing a husband can do is simply show up consistently.
Why is postpartum recovery so emotionally difficult?
Postpartum recovery affects much more than the body.
Many women are simultaneously recovering physically, adjusting hormonally, learning how to care for a newborn, navigating identity changes, and processing the emotional impact of the birth experience.
Crystal describes looking in the mirror after her C-section and feeling disconnected from the person looking back. Many mothers experience similar moments as they adjust to the realities of recovery and healing.
What should I do if my spouse struggles with body image after having a baby?
Lead with compassion, patience, and affirmation.
Many new mothers experience frustration, grief, or insecurity about the ways their bodies have changed after pregnancy and childbirth.
Doc shares that while Crystal focused on perceived imperfections, he saw the woman who had carried and delivered their child. That perspective helped him appreciate her sacrifice rather than focus on appearance alone. Love your spouse where they are, not where they think they need to be.
Is it normal to feel different after childbirth?
Absolutely. Childbirth is a major physical and emotional event. Recovery takes time, and many women report feeling unlike themselves for a season afterward.
The reality is that parenthood changes people. The goal is not to become who you were before. The goal is to grow into who you are becoming now.
Can having a baby strengthen a marriage?
Yes. While a baby introduces new challenges, it can also deepen connection.
For Doc and Crystal, seeing each other become parents created a new level of admiration, gratitude, and respect. Watching a spouse care for a child often reveals qualities that make love grow even stronger.
What does it mean to feel supported in marriage?
Support means knowing you are not carrying life's weight alone.
Crystal describes feeling anchored during a scary emergency delivery because she knew Doc was present, protective, and fully invested in her wellbeing. That sense of safety continued after they returned home and became an important part of their healing process.
Support doesn't remove the challenge. It changes how you experience it.
Why is emotional reassurance important after having a baby?
Many new parents carry unspoken fears:
Am I doing enough?
Am I a good parent?
Will my body ever feel normal again?
Am I still attractive?
Can I handle all of this?
Words of affirmation, affection, and encouragement provide stability when someone is struggling with uncertainty. Sometimes reassurance is not about fixing a problem. It is about reminding your spouse that they are not facing the problem alone.
How can couples stay connected after becoming parents?
Connection requires intentionality. The demands of parenting can easily consume all available time and energy. Couples who stay connected continue looking for small opportunities to talk, encourage one another, check in emotionally, and remember that they are partners before they are parents. Strong marriages make room for both relationships.
What if parenthood feels harder than I expected?
You are not alone. Many parents enter parenthood expecting joy and fulfillment but are surprised by how much fear, exhaustion, stress, and uncertainty arrive alongside those blessings.
Needing help does not mean you are failing. Feeling overwhelmed does not mean you are a bad parent. Parenting is one of life's biggest adjustments, and most people learn it one day at a time.
What is the biggest lesson from Episode 19?
The biggest lesson is that love becomes deeper when it moves beyond attraction and into sacrifice, support, and presence.
When Crystal struggled to recognize herself after childbirth, Doc saw beauty in everything she had endured to bring their daughter into the world. And when fear, uncertainty, and recovery made life difficult, they discovered that feeling held, protected, and supported can transform a challenging season into a strengthening one. What does love look like after the first child?
Love after the first child often looks different than it did before.
Sometimes it looks like sitting beside a hospital bed. Sometimes it looks like changing diapers at 3 a.m. Sometimes it looks like reassuring your spouse when they cannot see what makes them beautiful.
And sometimes love looks like choosing each other again while learning how to care for someone new.
The baby may change your life, but the way you love each other determines how you experience that change.

00:00 So,. what's up? We promised that we were going to talk. about life after the first kid. Mhm. And we're just going to jump right in. So,. I think the most. significant thing that I noticed about. you after we had Bear was. how attentive you were. Like y'all,. you know how they say when you have a. kid, for those of us who are blessed to.
00:30 have children, it's like you just. don't know what that love is like,. right? Right. You can't even imagine, you. can't fathom how much you can love some. little creature person, human being. other than yourself. And. that's all the way true. But the way. that I loved you. Mhm. after we had Bear was. so big because. I was totally jacked up. [laughter]
01:00 Like so bad. But what do you mean by jacked up. though? Because I So I had an emergency. C-section and you know Bear's heart. rate was dropping. you know, I had made. it to. what seven inches or inches, no. centimeters. Yeah. And it was like, "Oh, no. We got. to take her now. We got to take her. now.". And. I just remember feeling so safe and.
01:30 protected. Like even when I was getting. the epidural, it was like you was about. to punch that man in the face. Yes. [laughter] I don't even Those are. nonviolent. Nonviolent,. right? nonviolent. Our epidural story is a story in and of. itself, so maybe later. But. Yeah. And then I remember like when. we came Well, no, I just even remember. you holding her. Yeah. And like the way that you looked at her. and it was just like it was so perfect.
02:00 That was. Well, you know, I was I was excited. I. was excited about being a father. I. think you knew that. Yes. and seeing how, you know, I didn't. know my father growing up. I had a. father, but I didn't know him growing. up. So it was something that I was. really looking forward to. So. once that little creature came, it was. it was instant love. Like instant love. for me. Yeah. And like I And then the other. piece of it is like coming home like. woo coming home from the hospital, you. know, you're like oh I didn't know after.
02:30 you had a baby that everything just. didn't go back to normal. So, you know,. here I am waddling into the bathroom. trying to like go pee and I caught. myself in the mirror, y'all. Oh my god. [laughter] Oh. Oh my god. Oh. my god. I remember. y'all. I had They give you these little. mesh undies [laughter] when you go to. the hospital. When you leave the. hospital, they give you these mesh. underwear that are divine. I feel like.
03:00 everybody should have a pair of mesh. undies. But they give you these little. mesh undies because you're healing,. especially if you've had a cesarean, a. C-section. And I just caught a look of. me in the mirror. And I was just like,. "Oh my god, where what? Who is this? And. when will she come back?" Because this. ain't her. And I just remember you coming up behind.
03:30 me and giving me a hug and a kiss on the. cheek like, "Baby, you beautiful.". Yeah. And I was like, "You think I'm. bleeding?" Oh my. Because I feel like a. Oompa Loompa right now. And that girl in. the mirror ain't me. But you know, it's it's one of those,. you know,. specifically to the fellas. And maybe. I'm speaking for me, but I would if I. can give advice when it comes to, you. know, loving your wife. It's one of. those like you created a human. Like of course your body not Yeah. you. made a whole another person. And so to me it was it was.
04:00 it was beauty in that. Like I didn't see. all the quote unquote imperfections that. you saw. You know what I'm saying? I saw. those mesh panties. [laughter] I did see those. I like them bad boys. big. They were stretch. They was big. But it was like all I. saw was like this is the woman who. created a child and gave me a baby. So. when I say you look beautiful, it was. more than just a physical thing. from the eyesight it's like everything. you had going through to deliver that.
04:30 baby it was it was all beautiful. So. yeah. Yeah. So look fell love on that love on love. on love on your wife once they once they. kick out a baby man. Love on them. because. I mean but I feel like you should love. on them all the time. But definitely. definitely in that moment especially. when you're feeling like the way you. felt like I don't have the same body I. had. It's like well you gave that to. our child. though. Yeah. It and the takeaway was like,. okay, well, looks are fleeting. You hear this all the time. Looks are.
05:00 fleeting, but you learn to love the. person inside the body. Mhm. In a way that you could never imagine. Yeah. And I was so grateful. Like, oh my gosh. Like, [laughter] I couldn't stop looking at her. I was. like, oh my gosh. Like, look at your. nose and your eyes and your face and my. face and she's here and. Yeah, I know. It was like you had your. own personal doll. I did. I used to dress her up all the.
05:30 time, y'all. She's a little baby doll. I got so I got so tired of what is. it? Bows. Oh my gosh. Oh, yeah. The bows were a problem,. y'all. Oh, so many bows. Shout out to Landre, you know. Uhhuh. [laughter] But. yeah. Yeah. I think the first child it. comes with a few challenges but I think. that moment for us was that was quite. special. Well, thank you for loving me through it. because it was rough. Nobody was. expecting I me I'm nobody. I wasn't. expecting a C-section.
06:00 emergency. and you know have my mom and my dad. running up the hospital stairs. trying to get there before they wheeled. me out. It was scary. And just to be. anchored and to felt to feel held and. supported and secure. was everything. And then to feel that. same support and that same love. after just totally transformed. the closeness of our relationship. So,.
06:30 you know, if you choose to have. children, if you're blessed to have. children, you know, that's definitely. something to look forward to. because. there's nothing like it. No, not at all. Love it.
