frequently asked questions

Do happy couples get annoyed with each other?

Absolutely. One of the biggest myths about marriage is that successful couples stop irritating each other. In reality, every couple has habits, quirks, and behaviors that occasionally drive the other person crazy. Episode 34 reminds us that healthy marriages are not built by eliminating annoyance. They're built by learning how to handle it without destroying the relationship.

Why do small things become big arguments in marriage?

Because the argument is rarely about the thing itself. The dirty dish is usually not about the dish. The empty juice carton is usually not about the juice carton. The forgotten errand is usually not about the errand. Small frustrations often connect to larger issues such as feeling unheard, feeling unappreciated, or feeling like you carry more responsibility than your spouse realizes.

Is it normal to be frustrated by your spouse's habits?

Yes. Every person enters marriage with routines, preferences, and habits developed over a lifetime. Eventually those habits collide. One spouse squeezes the toothpaste a certain way. One spouse never finishes drinks. One spouse leaves cabinet doors open. One spouse cannot follow directions. The challenge isn't avoiding differences. The challenge is deciding which differences matter and which ones simply require grace.

Can little annoyances hurt a marriage?

They can if they are constantly ignored. Small frustrations become bigger problems when couples allow resentment to accumulate.Healthy marriages make room for conversations about minor issues before they become major sources of conflict. It is often easier to discuss an annoyance than to repair years of bitterness.

Why do couples argue about the same things repeatedly?

Because many recurring arguments are connected to recurring patterns. The topic may change, but the underlying issue stays the same. For example:

  • Feeling unheard

  • Feeling dismissed

  • Feeling unappreciated

  • Feeling controlled

  • Feeling overwhelmed

Until the deeper issue is addressed, the same conflict often shows up wearing different clothes.

How do you stop small annoyances from becoming resentment?

Start talking about them while they are still small. Resentment grows in silence. Humor can help. Conversation can help. Perspective can help. Most importantly, couples must be willing to address frustrations honestly without assuming the worst about each other.

Is it okay to laugh about marriage struggles?

Absolutely. Episode 34 works so well because it recognizes something important: Not every disagreement requires a crisis response.

Sometimes you need wisdom. Sometimes you need patience. And sometimes you simply need the ability to laugh at how ridiculous humans can be. Humor does not solve all problems, but it often helps couples survive them.

Why do married couples have different expectations?

Because expectations are usually formed long before marriage. People learn expectations from:

  • Parents

  • Culture

  • Previous relationships

  • Personal experiences

  • Family traditions

Many conflicts occur because one spouse assumes something is obvious while the other spouse has never thought about it that way.

Is my spouse intentionally trying to irritate me?

Usually not. Most annoying behaviors are not acts of war. They are often habits, blind spots, differences in personality, or things your spouse honestly doesn't notice. Assuming good intentions can prevent many unnecessary conflicts.

What should I do when something my spouse does drives me crazy?

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Is this actually important?

  2. Have I clearly communicated my concern?

  3. Is this a character issue or simply a preference issue?

Not every irritation deserves the same level of attention. Learning the difference can save a lot of unnecessary arguments.

Why is grace important in marriage?

Because eventually you will need the same grace you're being asked to give. Every spouse has habits that make life harder sometimes. Every spouse has weaknesses. Every spouse has blind spots. Grace creates room for imperfection while couples continue growing together.

How do happy couples handle everyday frustrations?

They learn perspective. Instead of asking: "Why are they doing this to me?"

They ask: "Is this worth damaging the relationship over?"

Healthy couples learn to distinguish between things that are irritating and things that are genuinely harmful. The difference matters.

What happens when acceptance becomes part of marriage?

Peace usually follows. Acceptance does not mean approving of everything. It means recognizing that your spouse is a human being, not a custom-built project. At some point, every healthy marriage develops the ability to say: "This drives me crazy... and I love you anyway."

Can small moments reveal bigger relationship issues?

Yes. Sometimes the argument about directions isn't really about directions. Sometimes the thermostat argument isn't really about temperature. Sometimes bean dip isn't really about bean dip. Those moments can uncover differences in communication, expectations, priorities, and conflict styles that deserve attention.

What is the biggest lesson from Episode 34?

The biggest lesson is that marriage isn't just about surviving major crises. It's also about surviving everyday life together. The forgotten tasks. The weird habits. The pet peeves. The recurring annoyances.

Strong marriages are built when couples learn how to extend grace, communicate honestly, laugh often, and remember that being irritated with your spouse is not the same thing as being unhappy with your spouse.

Sometimes love looks surprisingly ordinary. Sometimes love looks like finding another empty juice carton in the refrigerator and choosing not to start a war.

It's gonna it's going to sting a lot of. women out here. I think I think the guys. would agree with me. Being ready means you're ready. meaning. that when we get in the vehicle, you. don't have to do anything. No makeup, no. nothing. That means you are completely. ready. I just don't know that's reasonable.

01:30 if you're working [laughter] on a short. timeline. What's a short timeline? If I say, "Hey,. it starts at this time. Like to be gone. at this time.". 03:30 street, then go west.". And when I tell y'all she be on my head. about north, south, east, and west. I don't know what north, south. If the. sun is not rising or setting, how am I. supposed to know. where it is that I'm supposed to be. going? Like landmarks, they don't miss. Like, when was the last time they ripped. up a tree next to Taco Bell? No, the. tree is going to be there. Taco Bell is. going to be there. But I don't need to know north, south,.

04:00 east, west to know that I need to make a. right at the Taco Bell with the big. tree. Okay. I don't I just feel like it's I. feel like when everything is gone. [laughter] When everything is gone. Yeah. When everything Yeah. It's. apocalypse. You got to know north,. south, east, and west. You got to find. me. And you can't find me if I say turn. left. by the squirrel like [laughs] and the ant pile. Like you're not gonna. find me. [laughter] I just I it'll never work.

04:30 Okay. It'll never work. Okay. What else you got? What else you. got? I would say giving fair warning before. going into the bathroom. Why are we still on this? I mean, because clearly there's a. [laughter] there's a trend. What? I just feel like maybe you need some you. need some gas, some tubs, roll. so the world just going to think I'm out. here. I mean, you know, hey,.

05:00 so give a warning. These are things. These are things. So I should give a warning. You should give a warning. I don't just. walk into. I mean when how far should I text you as. I'm on there like, "Hey, FYI,. it's going down in here. Just don't let. me walk in there right after you leave. You just you got to be courageous. I forget. I just listen. Oh, you can't can't forget. [laughter] We are not going to be. eating ice cream without warning. Okay. Because those are the things that. Oh, I know. We I know I know one for me. Spicy foods. Spicy food ain't really spicy food. though. Like. it be Listen, it be spicy to me. I.

06:00 cannot take it. Spicy. everything. No. Yes. Like I you from down at. Houston part which is almost Louisiana. basically. So you add spices to every I like. flavor, right? We argue over the difference between. flavor and spice. Well to her like. that's just flavor for me. My mouth is. on fire. Nobody else complains about my food. Nobody else can't. I just. Is that me? Yes. Okay. I just knew. Y'all, I don't even eat. sweets. Okay. I am not the cookie. monster in the house. I leave that to my. children and my husband. Yes. But yes,. I went to go get a honey bun. I knew that there was one honey bun.

07:30 left. So you thought. and there was no honey bun, but there. was an empty box. I had my hopes and my. dreams up. I was I could taste it. I hear you. And then it wasn't there. Sorry. I don't know what to tell you. We. we talked about little Debbie, you. know, I had a thing for her. So if it's. sweet. So that just makes it permissible. I mean, for sure. No question. No. No. No question. Okay. [laughter] I got one. Okay. Shoot. y'all.

08:00 Where you about to go with. y'all? He has So I have to buy tweezer. man nail clippers and toenail. clippers because his toenails are so. strong and his fingernails are so. strong. And so when I. What man? Where are you going? So when I. am walking across the when I am walking. across the carpet in the bedroom and. my foot catches a slice of that toenail.

08:30 [laughter] Man, listen. You're not going to hit me. like this is a Martin episode. You're. not going to do me. I try to vacuum now. [laughter] cuz I realize. them toenails could be sharp. Them toenails are weapons. [laughter] They are weapons. And let me tell you,. they catch you off guard. Like it's. not like you going to just graze o over. them. You're going to it's going to stab. you [laughter] and you probably it's. probably going to be dark and you not. going to know what you going to think. you stepping on glass. I just feel is. that.

09:00 whenever you got to hold. whenever you got to hold the clipper. with both thumbs to snap it. I just. feel like that's not normal. I'm healthy. I don't know what kind of. keratin you got in your [laughter] I'm healthy. I'm healthy. Whatever. Okay. I got one. Okay. I got one. Speeding. Well, what does that got to do with. you? Cuz I'm in the car with you fearing for.

09:30 my life. You drive. You That's why [laughter] cuz you have a lead foot and a and a. little No, you've gotten better. But. there was a little road rage. So I'm not going to refute. I'm not going to refute this. [laughter] I drive fast. Yes, you do. I drive fast. I drive with Excuse me. Let me correct that. No, no, no. You said it. No. Okay, go ahead. I drive with purpose. I drive as if I. have somewhere to be. And that place,.

10:00 you know why. And that place needs me. It's cuz you're late. [laughter] That's why. That's why you drive with purpose. Like. [laughter] it's because you're late. You guys are purpose driven. You we'll go with that. But that is. definitely something that we. [laughter] have we have buted heads. about. I'm over there. fearing for my life [laughter] and you. just cruising away just they in my way. I mean it don't bother me. cuz you're in control. Yeah, you're right.

10:30 Besides that seat belt and the airbag,. I'm [laughter] terrified over there. Like for my life. Don't believe him. Don't believe him. You got There he goes. I would say Yeah. So, this is. something that is just as quizzical as. it comes. I don't understand how you can listen to. the TV on a whisper,. but you have talk radio turned up as. loud as it would go. It's like you get.

11:00 in the car and it's like the people just. like, you know, you just you. Doc,. why is talk radio so loud and why is. like regular TV and regular music so. low? Like what's the difference? Zero explanation. I don't know, D. But so but you do you agree? I don't know if I agree with it though. It I just I don't know if I agree. I got. to hear the in-depth conversation about. sports talk because I got to be ready. for argument when it break out and I got. to be clear. So, it has to be loud.

11:30 perspective. I don't know. It's not that. loud to me. I don't know. y'all. I'll be trying to listen to the. weatherman. Rick Mitchell is our he's. my weather man. I love Rick Mitchell. [laughter] NBC 5 shout out. yeah, but. I can't hear Rick Mitchell because you. listening to it on a whisper. Okay, look. Okay, let's transition that. then. I don't know how. So, and I. don't think we ever gonna not argue. about this one. Okay. Like you don't like when I fall asleep.

12:00 with the TV on. Oh, I can't stand that. That is that. But you fall asleep with the radio on. Yes. And that's different because. because the TV. flickers light and I can't sleep with. flickering light. That's like having a. strobe light on and you can see with. your eyes closed, you can see the. colors. Like I can't do that. I can't. sleep. It's all It's all sound. It's all sound.

12:30 Cuz you have it on mute and I still. can't sleep. No, it's all sound. No,. it is. Well, that's what we argue about. cuz I don't know how you fall asleep. with the radio jamming, but you can't. fall TV on. And I love fall TV puts me. to sleep. and music puts me to sleep. Well, we just going to keep arguing,. [laughter] I guess. So, we gonna keep doing. Okay. So, there have been plenty of. times where you have just started. talking and you just don't even care to.

13:00 bring me along in the conversation. Like, you'll just blurt something out. and I'm like, "What are you talking. about?" And it's because you think. it in your head. You'd had a whole. conversation in your head before you'. done said anything out loud and then you. just then you just blurted out and then. I'm I'm lost and you're looking at me. like with this blink like. I don't I don't recall I don't recall. any of that. You don't you don't just I don't recall. any of that. I'm sorry. I can't we can't. go back and forth. I don't recall me. starting in the middle of a. conversation. I mean look, you're a.

13:30 communicator. I figure you'll catch up. and figure it out maybe. I don't know. What about always taking a cell phone. charger? I can't y'all. We got 19. Here. we go. No, we got 5,467. charger blocks and we got a million and. a half charging cords. Only two of them. work. And [laughter] the two that work. are in his car. They're never where we put them. My phone's never going to die.

14:00 Yeah, but mine does. Mine does. And then. I can't find it. It's not a priority. for you. What? M. fact that's a good that's that's one. What? Your phone is always low. [laughter] I use my phone. No, your phone is always low. Like. you're always saying, "Oh, my phone. about to die. My phone about to die.". Why? Because I use my features on my cellular. device [laughter] and it helps me be productive throughout. the day. Maybe you should use your cell. phone a little bit more. I use my charger. You use my charger?

14:30 I use chargers plural. There is one in. my vehicle. There's one on my bedside. table and there's one there's one. there's one in the office and they're. all mine. No, they're not. Yes, they are. I'm just It is what it. is. I know one. Go ahead. What you got? What do you do with leftovers? Depends on what the leftovers are. Mhm. Why you making that face? What? What? What you speak your peace, woman? Come. on. I'm just saying because. depends on what it cuz some cuz some.

15:00 leftovers are not Is this a word? Warm. upable. Warm upable. Yeah. Like they're not. they just don't they don't taste the. same the next day. Y'all like. the leftovers will be an entire. ecosystem in the refrigerator. We will. have fuzz and mold and Mcflies and fur. flurries. I just. And I'm like, what would you throw them. away? Spaghetti that's going to last all week. long. We gonna smash that for a week.

15:30 easy. I can tell y'all right now the. the food that's always going to be eaten. in my house. Spaghetti, gumbo,. gumbo for sure. Lasagna for sure. And anything during soup season. Oh yeah. Taco soup. All that you make is. wonderful. Yeah. But the way part. outside of that. donations to the trash can. Yeah. But we don't they don't they. don't go there. They live in the. refrigerator. Yeah. We got to we got to start tasking. the offspring with that. Is that what we got to do? Yeah, we got.

16:00 to do that. Well, [laughter] look, I don't know what. y'all be arguing about that ain't the. other woman. it ain't infidelity,. but clearly we got plenty to. fuss about. We got work to do, y'all. Yeah, cuz [laughter] somebody. Whatever. Somebody over here. Whatever. Me and my bean dip. I can't. believe. what y'all be arguing about. We want to. know. Tell us in the comments, y'all. We'll see you. Bye. Peace.
